Maryart.

Mary Byrde was born in England and lives and works in The Netherlands and Portugal. She has been inspired by the abundance and variety of wild flowers growing in the Algarve, especially along the west coast in the “Pargue Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vincentina”. She makes regular walks along the cliffs and further inland in search of plants and flowers. Her garden also has many wild flowers including the orchids shown here.

Her water colour technique creates depth and translucency by the application of layers, painted directly and freely without prior drawing. Although the plants are observed as exactly as possible they are not botanical studies. She aims to capture the atmosphere of a specific plant or flower from the Parque Natural.

All the flower studies shown here have been made in 2004 and 2005.

Mary studied at the West Sussex College of Arts and Crafts in the sixties. In the eighties she became an art therapist, practising in The Netherlands for nineteen years. Since early retirement she has been able to devote more time to painting.
